Cult Of Erinya / Zifir: Split

12/07/13  ||  sincan

So this is a split album consisting of three tracks by Cult Of Erinya and four tracks by Zifir. I’ve never heard about these band before and it was with no expectations at all I gave it a shot or 10, for it must be said, this is some non catchy black metal. It actually starts off in what can be seen as a doom black metal version of Necros Christos, this by being darker and more obscure. This similarities will however fade away after the first track which is kind of sad since it’s the best track by Cult of Er…ection.

Well, then I must say that the first part of the split fades away in my memory as well, except for the Watain imitations in the track called “Hermitry” which is kind of fun if you know Swedish and have some imagination; “Herm” is close to the Swedish word for mimicking and I guess I don’t have to explain “I try”. I now feel a bit unfair to this band and it is not my intention except for the part of preaching about the lacking originality. Still it’s pretty descent executed music.

The highlights of the Zifir part is their intro to the first track and the instrumental final track, where the later had potential to be a both a longer and more memorable song. I don’t know why they put “War” in this split since it doesn’t fit the rest of their material at all by being more ambient early Burzum wannabe. Oh the madman laughter in “Sole wrong” is also pretty entertaining in a way but the rest of the song is also a bit insipid.

This split could be a gem, but the songwriting was unfortunately ruining it. By writing better and more memorable tracks this could actually be pretty good. Now it’s just decent, as I previously pointed out with my erected part of the body. But I guess it still can be something for people who loves to say things like “I only listen to black metal bands from Belgium and Turkey” because I know you wanders around on this planet, trying to listen to something which no one else listens to and finally you got something better than this
